Appetizers and Sides Dinner

Broccoli And Cauliflower Gratin

Broccoli and cauliflower are a great source of vitamin C. But let’s be honest, they can be just a tad boring. Making them into a gratin will jazz them up a bit and give them more flavor. Also, this broccoli and cauliflower gratin is a great substitute for Mc & Cheese if you are looking for a Carb-free meal. Just serve it with some grilled chicken and you’re set.

This gratin will make a phenomenal side dish for thanksgiving dinner. Because it has a mild taste, it will compliment the turkey very well. You can also prepare it up to a day ahead, wrap it with a plastic wrap and put it in the fridge. Then bake it right before you serve dinner, et voila one less side dish to worry about. And let me tell you, I have hosted parties of anywhere from 20 to 50 people. It can get crazy, but it’s truly not that complicated thanks to all the make ahead dishes in my repertoire. This broccoli and cauliflower gratin is of course one of them.

Prep time: 15 minutes
(includes the béchamel Sauce)

Cook time: 30 minutes

1 small head of cauliflower
1 small head of broccoli

1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese

Directions:

Cut the broccoli and cauliflower into florets, wash them well, and steam them for 5 to 7 minutes.
I like to steam the broccoli and cauliflower together to save time. But since cauliflower takes a little longer to cook, I usually place it at the bottom and top it off with the broccoli.

Arrange the steamed florets in an baking dish.

Spread the béchamel Sauce evenly on the vegetables.

Sprinkle the shredded cheese on top then add the butter pieces evenly on the gratin.

If you are making the gratin ahead, this is the stage when you wrap the baking dish and place it in the fridge. You can make it up to one day ahead.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the top is nicely browned.

To get this nicely browned top, this is what I do:

I bake the gratin for 20 to 25 minutes just until the cheese is melted, then I turn on the broil on high for ONLY 30 to 45 SECONDS. I stand by the oven and watch it. Once you achieve the brown top, after hopefully no longer than 45 seconds. Take the gratin out of the oven immediately.

Serve hot or at room temperature.

That is another reason why I love to serve this gratin at parties. You can serve it at room temperature and it will still be scrumptious.
